Entry Requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs (D or above) including English or successful completion of a Level 1 course with Functional Skills Math and English.  If you have not already achieved a Level 2 of GCSE grade C or above in English or Maths, you will be required to work towards a qualification as part of your vocational course.  This will increase your chances of employment or progression onto higher education.  You will be assessed and put onto a suitable course which will enable you to achieve a qualification.

How will I be assessed?

You will be required to complete two external assessments, and a variety of internal assessments, this will include some written work and some practical assignments for each unit studied. You will also produce a portfolio of evidence gathered during your work placement and you will be given help with this.

What could I study next?

If you achieve a good final grade for the course (Merit or Distinction Grade) you will be able to progress to a Level 3 course in Health and Social Care, e.g. BTEC Subsidiary Diploma. You can also find employment as a care worker in a Health and Social Care setting or enrol on an Apprenticeship.

Are there any additional costs?

There will be additional costs when starting the course that include a DBS check (approximately £44) and a Reference book (approximately £20).

Will I complete work placements?

You will need to complete a minimum of 60 hours work placement during the academic year and complete your portfolio of evidence.

Are trips and residentials organised during the course?

There will be various opportunities for you to visit local hospitals, and other locations within the care industry.

Are there any links with industry?

The department has excellent links within the health and social care sector. Guest speakers will be invited into college to share their own personal experiences. You will also have the opportunity to provide support in the community.
