Youth café to be run by college students

Warrington’s new youth café will be run by students from Warrington Collegiate through a number of volunteering and apprenticeship opportunities focused on their development.

Once the social enterprise has been developed students will be involved on a rota basis. Warrington Collegiate envisage that throughout the programme between 50 and 100 students, on a variety of courses, will be involved on both an employed and voluntary basis.

Students will be involved in the launch on 3 December including service. A local graduate student will be overseeing the running of the cafe in the initial development phase.

The young people involved will be trained in running a professional kitchen and undertake valuable qualifications as part of this, such as completing the food hygiene certificate.

The café, set to open to the public on 3 December, will not only offer students from the college the chance to get hands-on work experience and training, it will also offer local young people a safe place to meet up with friends and take part in a range of activities and get advice and information from the Warrington youth service staff who will also be based there.

Cllr Terry O’Neill, leader of Warrington Borough Council, said:

‘The fact that young people themselves from the college will be running the youth café is great news and illustrates the great partnership work that has gone into this project. I wish the students involved every success with their training and work at the café and look forward to visiting them there.’
