Paul Wood and Warrington Wolves lend support to Warrington Collegiate Public Services students’ White Ribbon Campaign

Warrington Wolves lend support to powerful student campaign

When Public Services students at Warrington Collegiate discovered that Domestic Violence was on the increase in the 16-24 age group, they decided to take a stand, raising awareness among their peers as well as fundraising for the national White Ribbon Campaign.

The students were inspired by Warrington Wolves player, Paul Wood, who spoke recently about the Warrington White Ribbon Campaign encouraging men of all ages to pledge that they will never commit, condone or remain silent about domestic violence and abuse.

IMGP1598"We at Warrington Wolves are all backing the White Ribbon appeal. I think it is fantastic that we are trying to challenge domestic violence within our society. Making people aware it goes on via this campaign may go some way to helping the violence to stop."

Warrington Borough Council, who have led the White Ribbon appeal, supported the students. The council’s domestic abuse coordinator highlighted the importance of the issue with the statistic that in 2010/11 children and young people were involved in almost half of the Warrington high risk cases.

Cllr Pat Wright, executive board member for health and wellbeing and adult services said: “I am really impressed to hear about the great work the students have carried out to raise awareness about this important issue and would like to congratulate them on their successful campaigning.”

Tina James, Course Leader at the Collegiate, saw the White Ribbon Campaign as an opportunity to develop the student’s enterprise skills and help students in their future careers, saying “ I’m proud of our students, not only did they raise over £96, they made their people take notice of a problem that does get the attention it should.”

Public Services student, Sarah Davies, from Orford, commented “As a team we feel really passionate about the campaign. We wanted people to know about the problem and that help is available for victim of abuse so they need not suffer in silence. If we can just help one family with our campaign, I will be very proud.”

The students produced a powerful presentation which was previewed at Warrington Collegiate, designed leaflets and posters to promote the white Ribbon Campaign as well as canvassing views and knowledge around domestic abuse in their age group.  A short film was made with Beauty Therapy providing the make-up, creating shocking scenes of cuts and bruises.

Paul Wood dropped into Warrington Collegiate to show his commitment to the White Ribbon Campaign and to congratulate the students on their impressive work.

Warrington Collegiate Public Services students have been nominated for an award recognising their significant contribution to the National White Ribbon campaign.
