Students Christmas Appeal for the Homeless

Kind hearted Health and Social Care students at Warrington Collegiate have been busy raising money and packing boxes in support of the annual Christmas appeal for the Homeless shelter in Warrington. Led by the students and ably supported by the Finance and Welfare Team in Student Support Services the response was outstanding.   Many homeless people will receive gifts on Christmas morning as well as donations of food, clothing, bedding and towels going to the Homeless Shelter.

18 year old Becky Irwin, from Padgate said “Homeless people shouldn’t be forgotten at this time of year. We wanted them to have presents to open on Christmas day.”

After a visit to the Homeless Shelter the students got busy with fundraising and raising awareness of the plight of the homeless.

“Visiting the shelter took my breath away, it wasn’t what I expected,” commented 18 year old Johnathan Cliffe, from Paddington. He added. “We saw how much hard work the volunteers do in support of homeless people in Warrington to make their time at the shelter a good experience.”

Marie Keeley, Manager of Guidance and Welfare, praised the students dedication and commitment saying “Everyone has done a fantastic job and we’re all proud of the hard work they’ve carried out in support of the Homeless appeal. The Homeless shelter does an amazing job caring at Christmas.  They need a substantial amount to keep running and we’re glad to have been able to help them with our fundraising efforts.”

Lecturer in Health and Social Care, Helen Hurst, said, “These students are planning to go to University to work in Health and Social Services. It is so important that they put the theory into practice and get as much real-life experience as possible. They ‘ve used their initiative working extremely hard to raising money for a good cause  as well as highlighting  the issue of homelessness at this time of year.
